Your first visit to St. Luke's

Are you thinking about visiting St. Luke's?

Maybe you’ve passed by and wondered what goes on inside.

Maybe a friend has invited you to come with her to church.

You may be attending  a wedding or a baptism, or you simply feel called to step inside.

Whatever the reason, you’re very welcome here.

If you’ve never been to church or if it’s been a while, some things may be unfamiliar, or new to you. We hope this guide will help you feel comfortable.

.

Can anyone go to church?

Yes. Everyone is welcome! No exceptions!

It can be intimidating to walk in the doors of a church,

especially if it’s new to you.

But please be assured:

You don’t have to believe the right things, have all (or any) of the answers, or live a certain kind of life. Wherever you are on your faith journey, you’re always welcome.

Our Sunday service is at 10 am. During the service, on most Sundays, we have a children's program. Your children are welcome to sit with you, or go to a welcoming space where there are stories, crafts and snacks with kind leaders.

We encourage you to explore our website, and visit our facebook page to learn a bit about us.

Worshipping together

We enjoy worship in the anglican tradition, with relevant sermons, lively music and a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Our Sunday morning will include readings from the bible, and prayers for the world, our neighbours and our own needs.

Most Sundays we have communion, when we bless and receive bread and wine.

Do you have to dress up?

Not at all. There’s no “dress code” for church. Some people dress informally, and others more formally. Wear what feels comfortable to you.

When you arrive

You may want to arrive a few minutes before the service starts. You can sit wherever you feel most comfortable. There is a bulletin for you to follow the service and space if you use a walker or are in a wheelchair.

Our building is accessible if you park at the rear of the building and come in through those doors. Someone will greet you and guide you into the worship space.

Our Church address is 566 Armour Road, Peterborough, Ontario, in East City.

During the service

You might be wondering when you should do what: kneel, sit, stand, say “Amen.” Just relax and follow what others are doing. You may see people bowing or making the sign of the cross at certain times, but this is a personal choice.

You can join in as much or as little as you’re comfortable with. Take in the music, the words of the Bible and the silences. Contemplate the symbols and images – the cross, the altar, and the candles.

The Peace

During our service, we exchange the Peace. People hear you may greet you  with a handshake or a bow and the words, “the Peace of Christ” or “Peace be with you.” Feel free to participate in a way that feels comfortable or appropriate to you.

Collection

During most Sunday morning services, there will be a collection of money to support the congregation and the needs of others. You’ll see people passing a  plate. You’re welcome to contribute, but don’t feel obligated.

After the service

We have coffee hour,  a time of refreshments and conversation following the Sunday service. You’re welcome to join in and mingle, but don’t feel obligated to stay. Feel free to introduce yourself to the priest and members of the community, and to ask questions. Pick up flyers about upcoming events and services. And most importantly, come back! We’d love to see you.

Questions?

Sometimes we find our way to church in a time of transition or because we have a desire to connect with the divine. If you have questions, or would like some support, you can contact one of our priests, Rev. Susan Spicer, or Rev. Doug Woods, and we would be happy to meet with you. Just call the office and ask to speak to one of us. (705) 742-6202.
